SystemRescueCD 1.3.0 Has Linux Kernel 2.6.31 (15/09/2009 - 21:21:55 PM)

(Softpedia.com) - SystemRescueCD, the popular data-recovery and system-administration Linux distribution, has just been updated. Version 1.3.0 brings the latest and greatest, stable Linux kernel, 2.6.31, along with btrfs-progs 1.41.9, thus incorporating support for the new Btrfs file system, which has been undergoing development since 2007.

Although exotic filesystems are well represented, the stable ones have also been well taken care of. This release of SystemRescueCD has NTFS improvements all around, through fsarchiver 0.5.9 and an advanced release of ntfs-3g, version 2009.4.4-AR17. Linux's Extended File System hasn't been forgotten either, with e2fsprogs being bumped to 1.41.9. If the EFI GPT partition table that's keeping track of all these filesystems and their location on disk needs fixing up, you have gdisk 0.3.1 at your fingertips.

This Gentoo-based distribution features, among the other graphical tools, the latest XFCE desktop environment, version 4.6.1. Even if it's just a stripped-down desktop, with the unnecessary bits removed to keep the distro size low, the amount of included functionality is amazing. You will also find Firefox 3.5.2 and Python 2.6.2, all of them in a 235MB, live Linux system.

About SystemRescueCd

SystemRescueCd, a Linux-based Live CD, is a quick and easy way to repair systems and recover data after serious crashes. With tools ranging from partition managers and disk-diagnostic mechanisms (like TestDisk and sfdisk) to basic, day-to-day applications (text editors, Midnight Commander, etc.), as well as support for all important filesystems, SystemRescueCd is a solution that anyone who is experiencing data-loss or other system-related problems should consider using.
